My Elf came of age today...

Post  bmcelf on Sun May 29, 2011 6:25 am

I took my Elf to the Greenville Scottish Games British Car Show in Greenville, SC today. On the way back my Riley Elf turned 100K miles. I got a video but it is pretty poor quality since I was driving in traffic on I85. Look closely and you can see it happen.

There was a really nice 1936 Riley Kestrel there but no booted minis. Various pictures from the event are posted at: http://rides.webshots.com/album/580265307zwlZeZ

A three hundred mile round trip today. I drive my cars!!! One guy about forced me off the road to get a picture of the car. At 70mph it is scary having some guy beside you hanging out his window waving at you. It happens a lot with everyone having a cellphone camera.

You will get use to that. I have had that happen tons of times. If you see a fender (wing) of a car out of the corner of your eye, chances are they are giving a thumbs up, waving or taking a picture. It is most gratifying when someone in a very expensive car appreciates your Elf/Hornet. I had a guy in a Bentley Continental GT pull next to me on a two lane twisty road and while overtaking me he stayed in the opposite lane to give me a thumbs up.

Good for you for driving your car! Can't stand it when you see a fantastic car being trailered to an event. It is a car, drive it!
I drive mine everywhere and have put just about 40K miles on my car since I bought it in 2008.

Also, with the 100K mile mark, you may have to inspect your engine to make sure it is in good nick.
Once my car did the 100k, it started to run on and had some other problems develop. I took the lump out and had the motor rebuilt at 122K miles and lucky I did since the bearings for the crank were down to the brass and my crank end float was 10mm. Yes, 10mms! Now that could be down to it having been sat for years and thrashed about by the previous owner.
