Rechroming - will it work on my bumpers?

Post  Coco_ChanElf on Wed Sep 14, 2011 12:25 am

My bumpers are not in bad shape other than a bit dull, a little bit pitted and a small ding in the back one.

Would rechroming work on less than perfect bumpers? Is it worth my rechroming the dented bumper - can I get it flattened out or am I wasting my time even trying?

Can anyone advise me on this. Have you attempted a similar job and how did it turn out?

Thanks for any info., you can give.

BTW I am in Ireland, if anyone can actually recommend a chromer here, I am all ears!

There was an article on how to rechrome your "bits" in a mag just recently (Minimag I think) They used a kit and rechromed a Elf/Hornet over rider in a bucket. I guess it would be a big job to do a bumper eg. where would you get a plastic container (recommended) big enough to submerge the whole bumper?
There is also the problem of stripping the old chrome right down to bare metal prior to re coating it before re chroming it.

I away from home at the mo. I expect to be at home this evening and will try and find the article for you if you wish?

There have been a few posts on this subject. Hers's one: re-chroming
There are tradesmen about that can do the work, cost seems to be the biggest factor.

Referring back to the first post I guess I misread into it? Your first move would probably be to contact a local classic car club and ask them who they would recommend. Some chromers do repairs as well as chroming.

Your advice is invaluable. Would love to see that article some time. Good idea to contact local classic car club as they might give me a clue as to who could do a good job on them. Not something I want to pay for twice!

Spray chroming?

Post  Coco_ChanElf on Tue Sep 27, 2011 11:40 pm

Excitingly (perhaps!) I have just heard tell of a chap starting a new business spray chroming in Dublin, near to me. Apparently he is bringing the equipment in especially from the USA and will be open for business in November 2011.

I had a chat with him on the phone today and he seems like a decent fellow.

My only concern is whether the spray chroming will be up to snuff - my brother has given me dire warnings off anything other than triple chroming.

Anyone seen anything that has been spray chromed and what was the verdict?
