Door check strap repair

Post  humph on Sun Oct 16, 2011 3:15 pm

One of the problem I've had since buying Bert can be seen in the pics below, it's the same on booth doors;

My question is how to repair? Will I get away with welding them around the cracks? Are repair panels available?

Second question. The other end of the check straps look like this;

Should this have a gasket on it? I thought I'd seen one on minispares or minisport, but can't find it now.

Thanks in advance.

door straps manual

Hi

I found the Somerford mini site quite useful. They have extensive spare parts manual on line. Welding the crack might be difficult especially if the panel is corroded from the inside and has no strength left. I drive a TR4A and ended up replacing the panel and that fixed the problem one and for all.

only way to repair is by welding - i'd grind out the crack a bit with a dremel type tool and weld it up - prob easier with the door off.

2. yes, there should be a rubber Grommet glued to the back of the a-panel where the check-strap goes through but i'm afraid i don't have a pic and not sure if you can get it but would be easy to cut one out from some rubber

hopefully partly helpful and not too confusing an answer!?

Thanks guys, didn't realise the rubber seal should be inside the A panel. Think initially I might need to come up with something that sticks to the outside just to kkep the water out. I'll look into welding the cracks in the door, but if the check strap connection is the same as the Mini it might be an idea to buy a couple of rotten Mini doors with these mounts in solid condition and cut out the broken section and replace with the solid bits. I am right in saying that Elf doors are different to Mini am I? Something about the locking mechanism position?

sorry but my description wasn't very good - here's a pic of jvg's slightly squashed original which should make it clearer
