Cooper S Disc Set Up Refurb Advice

Post  humph on Wed Feb 01, 2012 1:59 am

I bought a 7.5" Cooper S disc set up at Bingley on Sunday. They'll be going on my 1969 Elf. As far as I can tell it's all there, with the exception of the balls from the inner CV joint cage at the gearbox end of the drive shaft, and pads (there are disc guards too). Everything seems to move freely by hand. Question is what should I refurb before fitting?

The calipers need refurbing, so was planning new pistons and seals, as well as probably blast and paint. Do I need to split the caliper and renew the oil seal between the two halves?

As for the rest I've assumed ball joints, CV Joint & gaitor, bearings, inner pot joint & gaitor, bleed valve. I'd value opinions on what needs to be changes realistically.

I plan on putting minifins on the back to help there, is there anything else I can do.

Hi, Have you measured those discs? I hope I'm wrong, but they look a lot like 8.4" not 7.5"?
If they are, you can still use the hubs, but calipers and discs will need changing.

I haven't measured them, but they're definitely not 8.4" as I already have a set of them. They were going to go on but I just couldn't bring myself to lose the 10" wheels.

Ok, that's cool, I think you did really well with the price! 7.5's can fetch the equivalent of 450-500 quid down here in Aus!

Good luck with the refurb! Very Happy

Sorry, but I agree, the Callipers, discs & drive flanges are 8.4. If you want to use these with 10" wheels you will have to buy new S discs, drive flanges and Callipers. Wink

And pot joint axles that will have to be changed unless your car has been converted from its original set up...and lug nuts from a 12" wheel.
