MY 1965 998cc ENGINE REBUILD - STILL NOT TO MY SATISFACTION :

Post  David2010 on Wed May 22, 2013 11:45 am

Excessive oil consumption has plagued this engine since its complete rebuild in February 2012.
The engine developed a slight leak recently but this was traced to the dip-stick seal. New dip-stick seal = no more leaks.
The oil consumption has now levelled out to a figure of 150 miles per pint.
Its clear from this forum that some of you get figures far far better than this (500 - 1,000 miles to the pint or even better !).
I had the engine compression-tested yesterday and the news was not great. Piston No.3 and 4 only showed a reading of 95 - not good.
The consensus is piston ring trouble. The solution - engine out again - replace piston rings - maybe replace pistons - maybe rehone bores
not forgetting checking the valve seats for proper sealing.
Will advise when this surgery has been completed - but will wait until the end of the car-show season - which is just starting in Ireland.
