Right, so I started a new section as requested. Here are some pictures :

Was this badge fitted to any other BMC cars and/or Minis?

SOUTH AFRICAN MK3 STEERING B0SS BADGE :

Post  David2010 on Wed Jun 13, 2012 1:02 pm

I believe that I have what you are looking for - albeit not pristine - but in better condition than your photo example.
Strange to report this Austin steering wheel centre was fitted to a 1962 Riley Elf which I purchased back in 2003.
I just measured my example and it is 3.25 inches in diameter (they measured in inches back then)& metal base plate = 2.125 inches.
If this is what fits your steering wheel then you are more than welcome to have it with my compliments.
If so, then PM me with your full name & postal address in the RSA and I will pop it in the post to you.

Thanks for "unburying" the topic!

From the photos of the steering wheel, it looks to me like the center piece you need is English standard Mk II Austin. The size measurement should seal the deal.

I asked Nick Rogers to take a look on the other thread and he thought it was the same as the Mk II, as well, pending measurement.

I'll forward this link to him, too.

So, good news; although, don't get too excited! Even finding those type of parts in England is getting difficult. I looked for a long time for an Austin bonnet badge for my South African Countryman and had to make do with two "OK" used ones...and one of those was sent to me from outside England.

That then leaves one to wonder whether those UK badges were also available on the general Mk II here in SA too.

Would you like me to take a measurement of the steering centre as well as the boss badge itself?

I don't think I'll even attempt to look for one of those bonnet badges, unless one suddenly pops up unexpectedly. The same can be said for good 2nd hand tail light lenses here.

Measurements would be good. You'll need to match them for David2010, anyway.

I measured the boss hole in the steering and it was between 70mm and 71mm, so roughly 2.76". Like so :

SOUTH AFRICAN MK3 STEERING WHEEL BOSS:

I am quietly confident that the Austin Wheel Boss which is (as I write this) winging its way to you via Air mail will do the job.
It should be with you - according to our local Post Office - by next Thursday (21st June).

I also looks very likely that this particular Wheel Boss was originally fitted to a MK2 Austin Mini.

Right, so as promised, I fitted the steering boss badge received from David2010. I didn't push it in all the way as I still have to take the steering wheel off at some and didn't want to risk damaging the badge.

The said badge looks like so :

And on the steering wheel :

Closer:

A very good badge overall as the backing "clip" isn't detached like mine.

Thanks for the follow-up. So, we had the steering wheel and boss picked correctly in English production terms.

South African Mk3 Steering wheel Boss Badge :

The badge looks just great. I'm delighted that it will be put to good and proper use as for the past 9 years it was just gathering
dust in my shed in Dublin.

I'm sure you realise that when your car is finally fully restored and on the road - everytime you sound the horn - it will undoubtedly
have an Irish ring to its tone !!!

I'll still clean it up a little and try give it a careful polish, but I like how it isn't perfect. Imperfections add patina to the car and that particular part. Sure, it looks great if everything is perfect, but then it can't really be used, but that's just my opinion. I'll always remember exactly where the badge came from and what it adds to the car.
