Door rubber seals

Post  Red Riley on Thu Mar 12, 2009 3:21 am

Okay, I have the proper boot seal, now I'm wondering if I have the proper door seals. I bought a set of seals for a wind up window Mini. The right side door won't shut at all with these seals on. The left side door shuts nicely but won't lock. The old right side seal has a profile something like this:
Is this the right bit or what?

Hi

Sliding window door seals are like this (for general minis this is)

and windup are like this

(later mpi are different again)

Have the A panels and door pillars been rebuilt ? When I am doing a door pillar I have the door seal in place when I check the alignment of the door as it can make a big difference and then it is still a pain. BMC produced a special tool to help dealers with door alignment - a lump of 2 x 2 wood !

Hope this helps a bit

Okay, so apparently I have one of each type. Question is, are the Mini door seals the proper ones for the Elf, or were there some other ones used? On my car, the sliding window type seal "looks" more correct to me, as it doesn't take up as much space in the door jamb. The roll up window type seems to be over-sized, and almost blocks the courtesy light switch on the front of the door frame, although it seals the door much better than the sliding door seal when used on that side. Is there any type of seal that would be of a size in-between these two types? Scratching my head here. Neutral

The photo that Gordon has put on above is a MK 1/2 mini door rubber (external hinge)
The "loop" type for the MK3 does get in the way of the courtesy light switch in the door jamb.
There is no "in between" size.
If your MK1/2 rubber keeps the rain out (and the draughts!), keep it! Very Happy

I just found this website McMaster-Carr and I might try doing some measuring and try to order some seals that would be of a size that would be in-between the Mk1/2 and MK3 sizes, since the MK3 seal won't allow the door to shut on the nearside door, but the MK1/2 seal doesn't seal as well. Should be an interesting experiment anyway.

The tolerances on BMC cars in those days were terrible!
