Winkers that wink then wink as opposed to those that just wink,wink,wink...

Post  David2010 on Thu Feb 14, 2013 11:11 pm

An ongoing issue here in Dublin with the older 1960s Mini models (including my 1963 Mk.1 Elf & 1965 Mk1 Morris Cooper ) concerns winkers
or if you like indicators or trafficators. The local constabularly are not well pleased with cars that have their winkers going at an "excessive
speed " They claim that these " hyper indicators" are pulsing at nearly twice the speed that is required for safe recognition - especially when
on our Motorways. I've examined the flasher units in both my Minis & they appear to be original Lucas units apparently unchanged since they
were fitted during original assembly. However both are guilty of this taboo hyper flashing ".

I seem to remember reading somewhere that one should be careful when replacing original Lucas flasher units to make sure that a correct
new unit is fitted. Something about two types of Lucas flasher units - one correct for Minis with 4 flashers and the other for cars with 6
flashers (i.e. later Minis with side repeater indicators on the front wings ). Apparently fitting a 6 bulb unit to a car fitted with only 4 can
cause hyper flashing. As stated both my Minis appear to have their original flasher units but perhaps not. Is there any obvious way of
identifying which unit is which ?

Make sure the flasher unit is hanging vertically - off vertical can cause it to do bizarre things.

Hi Alex - no that, does not appear to be the problem. Looking at both my Riley and my Cooper, the Lucas Flasher units are hanging vertically
as originally fitted. I Would hazard a guess though that both units have been replaced during the Riley's 50 years and the Cooper's 48 years
existence. Am still wondering if there are two different Lucas flasher units ( one for 4 bulbs & one for 6 bulbs) .

Thanks for that information Tony
Looks like I need to get the first unit - the one described as Mk.1.
It looks to be the same shape as the Lucas Flasher units in both my Minins.
Will give Minispares a bell in the morning.
