Seats & colours

Post  Bracpan on Sat Apr 06, 2013 12:14 pm

I am rebuidling my Special Saloon Mk1 Riley Elf and although the car will be quiet extreme engine and chassis wise I am hopeing to fit as many retro references as possible to the original car.
Theis means returning the car to its original colours of Grey with a White roof and having the racing seat recovered to get as close as possible to the original look, If I can remember that far back ( I have owned the car for 39 years) they were 2 tone grey and red?

If any body can help with the proper/original colours of the car and some pics of simular seats I would be very grateful.

I also hope to refit some of the chrome trim ( I still have bits including the main grill).

Any help or advice appreciated.

Phil

I have got pics of two different grey's that the Elf was painted in. One Light, one Dark , ( my Elf had the 2 on it) can anybody tell me the correct colours or the names etc? Some one must know them? Is the white roof Old English White ?
I have found images of the old mini / elf seats on google..

Porter's book shows Birch Grey (GR3) as the only grey used on the Mk I in conjunction with a white (OEW, WT3) roof. It also shows four different interior combinatioins with the grey/white exterior.

The grey/red interior shows as: grey/cardinal red seats; cardinal red seat piping, grey/cardinal red liners; and cardinal red carpets.

This is the chart that I've been going by. MiniColour/MiniColors.html
It used to be on the web, I believe it was from the Porter book, but I can't say for sure.
It looks to me like Yukon Grey/Birch Grey was an option, with either Gray, Powder Blue, Cardinal Red or Dove Grey seats.

They do show as options, but Bracpan was looking specifically for a "white room" (which I took for a white roof).

What white room ? lol Thats one of my fav Cream tracks....
It only has to look retro not be 100% acurate, as the chassis and engine will be so diferent , so I might chose the red/grey covering for the seat from the early Cooper S...but I would like to use one of the correct Grey & white colour for the body.
Thanks for the list that is awsome, that gives me plenty of scope to play with.
I can see me having a real busy year getting it all ready for 2014, but really excited about the build.
Thanks again for your help
Phil.

Got it from the list, my Mk1 Elf was "Birch Grey (GR3) Old English White (WT3) Paint with Grey/Cardinal Red seats....
As I was only 16 when I bought the car it was not that colour very long, it then went Red up to the windows with white above , then when I first space framed it, it was Ferrari Boxer Red.. So now it will be its final rebuild and back full circle to Grey & White.
Many thanks Red Riley for the list.

Yes got there in the end thanks both....dont think ill be doing the roof lining or the matts.. lol!
I just have to double check the regs when I start back racing this season to make sure what I have planned is legal. Then its sell the Pulsar and on with the Elf....
I know some purist will be horified with what I am going to do, but I can garantee 100% it will be fast....and it will get noticed.
Once I have started on it i will try and keep you all updated.
Thanks again for your help.
