'Alf an Elf

Post  Red Riley on Sat Apr 20, 2013 2:00 am

Is this where these bonnet hinges are supposed to go?  Shocked

My 'alf an Elf project is coming along pretty well. I believe this is going to work!
Still a bit more cutting and fettling to do to get the front wings blended in to the body.

The front to rear balance is almost dead on 50/50.

Lots more pics here: On Flickr

I've got the old grotty Mini front panel cut back to clean edges where needed, and the side panels trimmed down close to where they will end up blending into the wings. A few more measurements needed to get everything aligned before making the final cuts. It's pretty amazing how much the body was twisted from the major wacking this thing took at some point in its previous life. There are no good measurement points that line up from side to side or front to rear. I'm pretty much just eyeballing it as I go along. Getting close, though.

The side seam lines are going to end up in line with the front seam/bumper lip.

I'll be closing this big hole eventually, and making the front panel solid to keep the wind out.

This will be the "Froot"

The shape of things to come.

Afraid the planning was a bit optimistic. I'll make it over one of these days, just not this time. Neutral

That looks an interesting way of doing it. I have a trailer project (which has been sidelined while I fix a few whole cars!), and I decided that a Clubman front end will be a better answer for what I want to do with it.

Finally making some more progress on the project, thanks to a friend helping me out with the welding and hammering. Got the quarterwings (that's what I'm calling them) tacked on and the front panel generally lined up. Next we'll work on pounding the still bent bonnet back into shape and working on the gaps, then fabricating some bracing to go where the inner wings used to be.

Brian - you are about to produce the ultimate Riley Elf Frankenstein !
All credit to your measuring/cutting/welding/fettling skills though - it will definitely be unique among Mini trailers.
My photo taken at last Sunday's National Car Show in Dublin shows the first Clubman/matching trailer combo that I've seen.

Thanks! I like the Matching wheels and paint on the Clubby-Trailer. Pity he hasn't added a set of GT stripes to the trailer, that would really complete the look.

Preparing for 'Alf's first outing. Not done with the welding and beating, and still looking a bit sorry for himself, but eager to show off at our annual fall show.

Yep. It's coming along slowly, but the plan is that it will be a matched set.

Defo. Grilles, lights, etc. It will even have a little cap on top in the proper whitehall beige. A right little 'alf-an-Elf.

Finally making some more gradual progress on this thing.

This is what it took to replace all the missing steel under what was left of the poor old Elf. flat steel to replace the missing boot floor, bits of an old steel garden cart to fill in the non-existing floor area under the bonnet area. The only bits of the Elf floor left to work with was the center part of the heel board and rear seat pan.

This is what it took to close all that in. Frankenstein's monster has nothing on this.

Built some "coffee can" shock towers for the coil-over springs to live in.

This is the frame for the trailer, using what was left of the pretzel shaped rear subbie.

Preparing to close in the grille opening.

And done. With a new donor bonnet in place (without the major twisting of the old one)
