sticky needle valves

Post  john&gina on Sun Nov 09, 2014 8:26 pm

Good afternoon all, wondered if anyone has had trouble with su needle valves sticking shut and starving the float chamber.
Fitted a new one about 9 months ago for same reason, been ok until today. Had to stop twice and wack the float chamber.
Will the later ball type valve fit ? Has anyone done this mod, advise would be great.
Happy motoring,
John & Gina Whipp

STICKY NEEDLE VALVES :

Post  David2010 on Wed Nov 12, 2014 1:21 am

Yes - I can report encountering the same problem some time ago on the twin 1.5" S.U.s fitted to my Mk.1 Elf rally car.
At first I had been advised by the gentleman who rebuilt the engine of this car to "scrap those carbs as they were worn out ! "
Luckily I got a second opinion from Dublin's S.U. carb agents (McNamaras). They reported very little wrong with either of the carbs
- BUT - both were in urgent need of thorough lubrication. They used a special white grease as recommended by S.U.which sorted
everything. Unfortunately I did not think to ask for the actual brand name of this S.U.grease (?).
Hope this is of some help.

Thanks David, that's very helpful. Must be a special type of grease as petrol is flowing through all the time.
If you do find out more about it would you kindly post it on the forum.
Regards
John.
