Hello and some help straight away!

Post  alexm on Mon Jun 29, 2015 2:21 pm

Hello all,

I'm new and am looking for a car to fill the void in my garage. One of the cars that my wife and I quite like the idea of owning an Elf or Hornet. We call them posh minis. I know a fair bit about early minis having restored a MK1 Austin Cooper, but I'm fresh to the Elf/Hornet world and need to do some research.

We have found an Elf residing fairly local to us, and I wondered if people in the know could pass judgment on it for me. I'm looking to see what's standard/non-standard and form an opinion on the price (I assume it's fairly steep being a trader, but not sure how far off a private value it may be).

Is the Mk2 desirable? What sort of numbers were produced? Is the mini cooper colour scheme standard? I'm guessing the heritage centre at Gaydon would hold a record for this car?

[As a new member I'm not allowed to post a direct link to this Elf, but it's with Hartford classics and is easy to find via google]

Thanks very much in advance. I will try and clue myself up a bit later.

Alex

Hi Alex,
I've had a look on their website and it looks fairly good to me. I paid the same price about 3 months ago for a 69 Mk3 on Ebay which isnt all that different - see pics in the "Projects" thread. The seats might need recovering or at least repair. I would say its a MK3 not a Mk2 as it has the later wind-up windows but as for exact dates of production I'm not sure. If you know your way around a MK1 Mini you will find lots of familiar bits on the Elf. I would say its definately worth a try.
I'm already having great fun in mine and no matter where you stop, it always seems to draw a crowd of admirers. Cool
Good luck to you.

Hi Boris,

I had noticed from my quick look through the forum that a 1969 G plate car may well be mk3? I wonder if the chassis number or other features would confirm this?

Some research into the production dates may confirm that.
Mines a "G" Reg Mk3 and was registered March 1969.
I dont have that in depth knowledge of the differences between the Mk2 & Mk3 (but I'm sure that some on here do!) so cant really say but apart from the colour that Elf looks almost identical to mine.
It would be interesting to see a pic of what badges are on the boot.

Just a couple of things I've noticed on closer inspection .....

Its got an Alternator fitted at some point, which is not a bad thing - It would originally of had a Dynamo and Lucas Control Box.
It seems to be missing the overiders on the rear bumper.

If you go and see it have a good look at the sills and underneath the back end, but thats all general Mini tips anyway.

I'm all for an alternator conversion to be honest! Wikipedia just gave me a very quick lesson and it seems the mk3 came in around 66 and production ceased later in 69.

It MUST be a Mk3 then not a Mk2.
I wonder what it says on the Log Book?
It might be good to check the chassis and engine numbers on the car to see that they match whats on the Log Book as well ?
