Sign the scrappage petition

Post  TONYELF on Wed Aug 12, 2009 5:58 pm

Here is your chance to sign against the mini and other classics. It only takes a minute. Steve Colbran and Karen Drury from Mini World staff have already signed up.

Suspect it's already too late - the funds are running out so it won't go on much longer.

We already know of one serviceable Clubman Estate that has fallen foul of it - having been scrapped thus, the breakers are not even allowed to sell the engine or shell. Bad business.

A beautiful 1950's Riley RM has just been saved but only by chance. The owner now quite elderly was unable to both maintain and drive the car (heavy steering) and not realising its value and historic importance handed it in for a BMW Mini thing. The editor of the Riley Record spotted it and saved it at the last minute. It had already arrived at the scrapyard and was still on the low-loader ready to be crushed.
So although once agreed, there still is some chance to save these vehicles but for the sum of at least £2000.00.
Just as well the Scrapage funds are running out. A good idea in theory but one wonders how many more classics have been lost.

Of course they do ,their livelyhood depends on it! I agree that there are 1000's of "modern day's cars on the roads that are lethal but Classic owners tend to look after their treasures far more then the "Just Buy and drive into the ground" brigade (the throwaway society?)

It's done exactly what it was intended to do, kick-start sales of new cars for the industry's benefit. Don't lets ever pretend it had anything to do with the environment!

Unfortunately it's a bit of a blunt instrument where classics are concerned; while there are plenty of 10yr+ cars that should be scrapped and no-one would shed a tear over, there are also owners that are not knowledgable/scrupulous/emotive enough to care about scrapping a good usable historic vehicle.
