Interesting floor. There don't appear to be any separate sills? Obviously the absence of rear parcel bins inside the car has made them adopt a different approach to the sills.

The first two numbers on the suspension arm are just part numbers - not sure why there's two without looking them up. The others are probably just casting codes.

Today I finished the switchboard. I don't have a key. Do you know anyone making repro keys? There is a code on the barrel.

I have also started cleaning and paintin suspension parts. I found this stamped on the front top suspension link bearing. I had never heard of this company.

And finally I received some carpet samples from Lloyds Loom (top and middle). They have a beautiful fine weave but its not herringbone patern. I think I still prefer the coarser but more correct looking Sisal carpet (bottom).

There are plenty of keys being supplied at shows & autojumbles, but try here: Wilco Direct

For some reason this didn't post last time.

Believe it or not, Torrington bearings were quite big. I've used them in both the air force and in my harley. A couple years back they were acquired by Timken.

Hi John,

If you would like to PM me the barrel number, I'll see if I can get you a key.

The car is finally off the rotisserie. It is programed to go to the paintshop on Friday.

A few interesting notes.

The rear bumper is attached to a double lip, clearly visible here.

This is how the screen vent is blanked out

The suspension components are coming along

Its a pity this MOWOG stencil on the front subframe will be powdercoated....

Re: MOWOG - you could keep the picture, measure it up and paint it back in after - chances are that no-one will ever see it, but you'll know it's there!

I do hope one or both of the mini mags is keeping an eye on this little car 'cos it'd be a great trip on expenses to go over and do a 'photo shoot on it! Very Happy

Great work, keep it up my friend....

Today I got involved with the fuel pump and the steering column

Before

After

The steering column was painted in three layers. Black over white over blue.

They cleaned out nicely

I also bought this starter button from ebay and it is dated 10 60, which is pretty perfect for my car.

Tomorrow the car is off to the paintshop.
A week or two of prep work and then I will have a beautiful painted shell.

The car finally left the body-shop and is now at the paint-shop.

I also organized most of the parts I have so I can have a clearer picture of what to do next and more importantly, where everything is....

catmint wrote:Right, as promised the details of the production beach cars that we hold.

We have records for 14 cars built from 20/12/61 to 19/3/62 - all were LH drive and listed as export - 11 of which were noted as destined for the USA

Chassis numbers are all 19***, some have the prefix of ST

And that is it I am afraid

Catmint
Gordon, this gets more interesting as we dig deeper. In Jon Pressnell's Mini The Definititive History he claims that Nine cars were built.one was briefly used by The Queen (probably to nip to the loo, my words!) at Windsor Castle, another was offered a a prize in a contest run by BMC and it seems that some were lent to or sold to luxury hotels.
Ultimately those that stayed in Bmc hands were sold to employees; at least three survive.
JP claims that a figure of 16 quoted in Laurence Pomeroy's "The Mini Story" is likely to be erroneous (Doug Adams) Doug Adams signed my copy in 2009
There are three photograghs in his article one shows a horizontal seam on front wing from head light to the A post.(I think it looks quite smart and adds some stiffness to the wing)
This throws all the figures into disarray!

The car is now being "ironed" at the paintshop. Progress is very rapid.

Note the curves at the end of the numberplate recession. Looking at Elf/Hornet pictures the recess fades out in a straight line.

I am really enjoying this thread - thanks for the inundation of photos, you are doing a fantastic job on this little car. What is the final colour choice ?

with regard to the curve recess on the boot lid, very early MKI hornets and elfs also had this feature, not sure when it was phased out though but I think it was not far into initial production

The car will be painted the same colour as original. A machine will analyze part of the dash rail that retains the original blue colour. Itried various period codes but could not find an exact match
